All the way back to the 1400's Touchon's have excelled in what they have set their mined to. From Generals, Doctors, Pastors, and owners of successful business. Many Touchon's have held themselves to a higher standard.
The Touchon & Co trademark was established around 1901 and ceased in 1921 as an independent entity before being incorporated into a larger company ( Wittnauer ). In their short lifespan, Touchon made watches of a staggeringly high quality. Such high quality was very expensive to produce and very few people could afford them. Tiffany & Co were one of their main customers which added to their exclusivity and expensive nature. Touchon watches were every bit as good as Patek Philippe and much more exclusive as they were only produced for 14 years.... After the incorporation with Wittnauer, watch production continued for a few years under Wittnauer supervision, but these watches were built down to a price and no match for 'pure' Touchons. In the end, demand ceased and the name simply vanished into history.
To give you some idea of the exclusive nature of Touchon watches, their pocket watches when new, were advertised at 2 or 3 times the price of Agassiz equivalents and 5 or 6 times the price of Longines examples. Some of the Touchon ladies platinum and diamond watches cost $2000 !!!! This was an enormous sum of money for 1930.

The Belamarich Award Committee is very pleased to announce the recipient of the 2009 Belamarich Award for Outstanding Work at the Doctoral Level: Justin Touchon.
Justin's doctoral dissertation, "Developmental Ecology and Reproductive Mode Plasticity of a Neotropical Treefrog: Interacting Abiotic and Biotic Environmental Effects Over Three Life Stages," was completed with Dr. Karen Warketin and defended this past April.
Since both Justin and Karen are presently continuing their field work in Panama, we plan an award ceremony sometime in early fall.

Life expectancy continues to increase in western countries, but with age intellectual abilities also tend to decrease. Alzheimer's disease is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders, affecting 24,3 million persons in the world with around 4.6 million new cases each year, of which 850 000 are from France. Over age 75, 13.2% of men and 20.5 % of women have this disorder. Even though it is now possible to identify changes within the brains of persons with Alzheimer's disease (senile plaques and neuronal degeneration), the risk factors for developing this disorder are still poorly understood. Knowledge of risk factors is important for the development of primay and secondary prevention programmes.
Our team conducts population research into cerebral ageing. We are part of a research project involving 10000 persons aged 65 years and over in three regions of France; Bordeaux, Dijon, Montpellier, the 3 City Study.The principal aim of this study is to analyze the role of vascular pathology (hypertension, coronary disease, stroke) in the ageing of the brain. This study also allows us to examine the causes of other more rare neurodegenerative disorders such as Lewy body dementia or mild cognitive disorder and its evolution towards dementia.
We are particularly interested in nutrition as a risk factor for both normal and pathological cerebral ageing, measured both through examination of eating habits and biological measures. The principal axes of research are oxydative stress and lipids in relation to inflammation. Other risk factors are also being studied including physical activity and leisure activities, and professional risks. Clinical research is also being undertaken to test new medications and to develop optimal techniques in imaging, biology and neuropsychology for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and prediction of evolution from mild cognitive impairment to dementia.
Our clinical projects are carried out as part of our Memory Research and Resource Centre (CM2R) located at the Montpellier University Hospital in collaboration with other French and international centres.
