  What Would You Do If...  

...You were pulled over for a burnt out taillight and found yourself handcuffed, and facing jail time?  This is what happened to a young man in Shelton, Washington. As he was waiting to have his license returned the police officer informed him he was under arrest for an outstanding warrant of armed robbery in Colorado.  He quickly told the officer he had never been to Colorado-never even been out of the state of Washington.  It didn't matter - he was taken to jail.  How could this happen?  At sixteen years old, he lost his license and just replaced it.  His identity was stolen. A thief had been using it for 3 years racking up a stack of offenses. Because he had access to our services, he only spent a couple of hours at the police station-rather than time behind bars.

...You turned in an application for a job and were denied because you were already on the payroll?  A young lady went to apply for a job at Target.  When she went in for the interview she was told that she was already working there.  How could that be?  Her identity was being used in several states to secure employment unbeknownst to her.  The next nightmare - having to explain to the IRS her predicament.  Have you ever tried to deal with the IRS? 

...Your social security number was fraudulently used? HULIQ.com reported 25 illegal immigrants were arrested for transferring, possessing or using the stolen identities of Americans in order to work in the United States. If found guilty maximum charges they face is only two years in Prison!  The victims are left to clean up their own records and straighten this mess out with the IRS, which could be a lifetime event. Oh, and what about the rest of the illegal immigrants that have not been caught?

....A friend told you they stumbled across your private information online....and you don't even own a computer?  A Florida woman discovered that her marriage license was viewable on the Orange County (FL) controller's web site after someone applied for a loan in her name. The license revealed the woman's name, date of birth and SSN, as well as those of her husband. The Orange County comptroller reportedly paid a vendor $500,000 to black out all SSNs on the web site.

....You received a hospital bill from a collection agency for the amputation of your left leg?  Recent AARP Bulletins and Reader's Digest articles have both highlighted such horror stories. After a case of medical identity theft occurred at the University of Connecticut Health Center, mandatory driver's license checks were implemented for patients. The Health center staff told World Privacy Forum researchers that approximately a dozen people each week attempt to impersonate beneficiaries.
