What is Toastmasters?

Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational corporation with a mission to improve communication and leadership skills.

What will I learn as a Toastmasters?

In Toastmasters you will learn how to successfully formulate, express and sell your ideas and yourself and get rid of that nervousness you feel when called upon to speak. You will improve your ability to listen to and evaluate other people's ideas and you will improve your leadership abilities.

How often does the Northeast Toastmasters meet?

Our club meets every Tuesday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the House of Arts, 7938 Bustleton Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19152.

Can I just come and watch for a while without joining?

Yes. Meetings are open to the general public.

How many times can I come before I have to join?

As often as you want.

Who do I talk to about joining?

The Vice President of Membership or any club officer.

When can I join?

Anytime

How much does it cost to become a member?

Dues are $37.00 (paid every six months) plus a one-time new member fee of $20.00. This provides your educational materials (including your first 5 manuals) and subscription to Toastmasters International monthly magazine.

What materials are provided to me?

When you join you will receive a packet of material that includes everything you need during your first month as a Toastmaster. You will receive your two basic manuals (one for Competent Communicator and one for Competent Leader) from Toastmasters International in less than 10 days. In addition, as a member you receive a monthly Toastmasters magazine from Toastmasters International.

Who decides which member performs what function during a meeting?

The Vice President of Education prepares the schedule. Each week's Toastmaster also has some discretion with that week's agenda.

After I join am I on my own?

No - Northeast Philly Toastmasters has a mentoring program whereby you may ask another member (or request that a member be assigned to you) to function as a mentor to help you with your progress in Toastmasters.
