It's no secret: Identity Theft is a major problem in America.

Think you're not at risk? Unfortunately, you are. Do you hand your credit card to servers at restaurants? Do you sign your credit cards? Do you supply personal information over the Internet? Do you keep your Social Security number in your wallet or purse? Do you leave mail at your home or business for the postal carrier to collect? Do you shred unwanted mail with personal information?

"How to protectyour child's identity from being compromised"

1 - Talk to your child about the importance of keeping their personal business private. No "friend" needs to know the child's mother's maiden name, for example. Friends don't need to know Social Security numbers either.

2 - Monitor your mail.  Be suspicious if offers for preapproved credit are addressed to your child.
3- Don't disclose your child's Social Security number unless absolutely necessary.
4- Monitor your child's personal information posted on social networking sites.

5- Be sure to keep all subscriptions in a parent's name, not the child's name.

6- Educate your child about the importance of keeping personal information -- such as last name, address, date of birth, etc. -- private when sharing information online.

7- Educate your child about unsolicited email scams -- :phishing" emails --that ask for personal information.  Be certain that your child knows to igmore and delete fraudulent emails.
8-Don't allow children to use your credit cards -- especially for online purchases -- without your permission and without your presence.
9- No one should keep a Social Security card ina  wallet or backpack.  Keep your child's card locked up at home.
10- Also, lock up your child's birth certificate and other private information, especially before you have visitors or caregivers come over.

11-Ask the following agencies about their identity protection policies: Hospitals and doctor's offices, libraries, day care centers, sports teams, social and community clubs, schools, religious organizations
