An ancient healing art for today's stress.

What is it?

True reflexology is not a foot massage, or the Asian version of reflexology which can sometimes be extremely painful.  If you haven't had Ingham Method Reflexology performed by a certified Reflexologist, then you probably haven't had a true "clinical" reflexology session!  Reflexology today is a science and healing art based on the principle there are reflex areas in the feet and hands that correspond to all of the glands, organs and parts of the body. "Reflex" refers to the fact that these points are responsive to stimulus. We know from tomb illustrations and artifacts that ancient civilizations worked on the feet and hands to promote better health.  Today, new studies are revealing the amazing benefits of Reflexology.  Reflexology has been recommended on Oprah by Dr. Oz who uses it in his own practice.  It is also being used in European hospitals for pain management, in Denmark instead of surgery to treat carpal tunnel syndrome, and it is part of the national healthcare in the UK.  Many athletes now recognize its benefits for pain management and relaxation to help enhance their performance or to help speed recovery from injuries.  Research has shown that a reflexology session can promote theta brainwave activity which is the deepest, most restful and healing state.

Due to stress, inactivity or illness, muscles weaken; muscle tissue in our feet gives way and excessive pressure is exerted on nerve endings. As a result our bloodstream can become congested, lacking in its oxygen-rich nutrients. By applying pressure using thumb, finger and hand techniques to these reflex areas we can reduce stress which naturally promotes improving circulation, unblocking nerve impulses, reducing body tension and enhancing relaxation.

The Ingham Method® of Reflexology is taught by the International Institute of Reflexology, which is the world's leading authority, celebrating over 70 years of instruction and experience. The Institute has over 25,000 active members found in all parts of the globe.

Reflexology is a unique modality in the health field. Its purpose is not to treat or diagnose for any specific medical disorder, but to promote better health and well being in the same way as an exercise or diet program. Its practice should not be compared to massage or any other kind of manipulative procedure.  The International Institute of Reflexology® wishes to make it perfectly clear that it does not purport to teach medical practice in any form; nor is the Ingham Method® of Reflexology intended to replace conventional medical treatment.  Note that the State of California does not currently license Reflexologists as healing arts practitioners.

What benefits can I expect?

  • Relief of stress and tension
  • Improved nerve and blood supply
  • Improved sleep and concentration
  • Promotes unblocking of nerve impulses
  • Helps nature to normalize
  • Helps achieve homeostasis (the body maintaining stability or balance).

What will I experience in a Reflexology session?

You'll complete a brief health questionnaire and we'll discuss the information. After removing your shoes and socks, you'll recline in a zero-gravity chair with a pillow supporting your lower legs and feet. I'll work systematically over each foot, kneading it, loosening each toe and relaxing the many muscles, tendons, bones and ligaments.  A session will stimulate over 7,000 nerve endings. Together we'll identify any tender spots (areas of congestion) and give them extra attention. Throughout the session I'll perform relaxation techniques.  In some cases, we may work on only your hands or on hands as well as feet.  At the end we may discuss homework techniques for you to perform on your hands to help any problem areas interim to sessions with me.

Only my thumb and fingers are used during a session.  No tools, needles or other devices are involved. If you have an injury or recently had surgery on your foot, we can work corresponding areas on the hand instead. Pressure is adjusted to a level at which you are comfortable. The deeper we work the more benefit you will experience quickly, but we will only work at a level that is not painful for you.  Those who are concerned about being ticklish soon discover it's not a problem.

Testimonials

The reflexology I received from you after my surgery for melanoma and lymph node removal was, I feel, very helpful in speeding my recovery.  You used just the right touch to clear my lymphatic system and also the the drugs I received during and after surgery have not lingered as long as those I had with my two previous surgeries.  I am well on the road to recovery and I know it is because of alternative therapies such as reflexology that I am healing so quickly.  I would recommend this therapy to everyone.   B.K.

Susan has a wonderful calming touch and is always interested in your well-being.  She will give you helpful suggestions and is very caring. You will enjoy having her work on your feet and talking with her.  Reflexology adds yet another dimension to increasing your good health and happiness.   D.S.
