MOVING CHECKLIST:

3-4 Weeks Prior to the Move:

• Create a Moving Folder to keep track of important papers, such as receipts
• Go through closets, garage and storage to gather old or unused items, which can be donated or sold.
• Begin pre-packing items in the house that are not going to be needed prior to the move.
• Make sure to label boxes according to what room they should be placed in at your new home.
• Find out where chemicals need to be disposed of by calling your local Chamber of Commerce.
• Check on insurance to cover your belongings during the move.

1-2 Weeks Prior to the Move:

• Designate a particular room or section of the house to place packed boxes, but be sure not to block any major entrances or walkways so the movers will be able to move out large furniture first on moving day.
• Change your address with the Post Office and DMV.
• Order Utility services to be turned on at the new house and turned off at the old house. Be sure to allow some crossover time with electricity and water services so you can come back to the old house and clean or do final walkthroughs.
• Clean all major appliances. Put deodorizer in refrigerator and freezer.
• Cancel any newspaper subscriptions.
• IF USING PACKERS IN THE DAYS BEFORE THE MOVE :
• Be sure to emphasize what items are fragile.
• Organize items that should be packed together.
• Use a floor plan of the new house to show movers where to put large furniture and labeled boxes. (i.e. Master Bedroom, Boy's room).

DAY OF MOVE :

• Have an ice chest for drinks since the refrigerator will be unplugged or gone.
• Be on hand to assist with any questions.
• Double check closets, drawers, cabinets, bathrooms, storage and attic.
• Be responsible for your own valuable jewelry, cash or coins.
• After everything is moved be sure to turn off all electricity, gas, water. Double check that all windows and doors are locked.
• Take a final walkthrough and don't forget to check the attic.
• Be prepared to pay for your moving services with a certified check, unless you have pre-paid for the move. If you intend to tip the movers, please do so separately from any check or money order.
• Leave the keys.
• ONCE YOUR MOVE IS COMPLETED:
• Be sure to check with the Post Office for any mail that may have been held during the move.
• Change addresses with Credit Card companies.
